We welcome young people with all levels of ability to work in a lively, enthusiastic and supportive atmosphere.Whilst anyone can join us, we give priority to those who may not otherwise have access to such opportunities and/or who would benefit from having additional support.
We have great resources. The rock school has two studios each equipped with guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, amplifiers, microphones and a PA system. Coordinated by a professional music leader, local musicians volunteer their services to coach, nurture and support young people to learn to play these instruments, sing and write their own songs. This culminates in two live shows each year where our students perform, enabling them to express themselves, building their confidence, self esteem and sense of acheivement.
We don’t follow a formal curriculum. We don’t study Beethoven or make covers. Instead, we focus on our students’ musical interests, abilities and ambitions to create original music in a cooperative way. Everyone’s contribution is valued in our nurturing, team-based approach and encouraging the exploration and input of experiences, emotions and opinions are key to this. We particularly strive to help those who do not ‘click’ or thrive with the traditional music curriculum at school, but who have an innate love of music and want to develop and show this to others.
We also run a number of our charged services - this helps to support our free workshops.
• We run a wide range of outreach programmes for other organisations and youth projects supporting severely disadvantaged young people explore and create their own music.
• We run music workshops for adults of all ages and abilities
• We hire out our studios and equipment
We are very grateful to our funders and supporters who help maintain our services, especially Winchester City Council,Youth Music, Boomtown and Alresford Festivals,
Health Education England,Winchester Rotray and Roundtable.
